Black seed is a common herb mainly used for traditional medicines in the Middle East, Africa and by the Roman Empire for thousands of years. It has therapeutic benefits along with healing properties and often called “the miracle herb”.
It comes from the beautiful Nigella Sativa plant that grows in Southwest Asia, the Middle East, and Southern Europe. The seeds of this plant are also called black cumin, black caraway, nigella or fennel flower interchangeably.
Studies show that Black Seed oil may have many health benefits including the treatment of asthma and having antioxidant properties. It can also have some positive effects on your skin and hair. While it’s used to help many health conditions, there’s not a scientific evidence to support its benefits.
Along with its medical uses, black seed oil has been commonly used to improve overall hair and skin conditions. Due its antimictobial and anti-inflammatory effects, black seed oil may help with treating acne, eczema, psoriasis, acne and dry skin. Topical application of black seed oil may help with hair conditions such as improving shine and texture.
2. High in antioxidants
Black seed oil is found to have high antioxidant levels because they are high in thymoquinone and it may help to protect cells against damages caused by free radicals.
Antioxidants help to reduce inflammation and protect against some serious health conditions such as cancer or heart diseases. That is why it’s important for our health to incorporate foods that are high in antioxidant in daily diets.
3. May help in treating asthma
Thymoquinone component in the black seed oil helps to treat asthma by reducing inflammation and relaxing muscles in the airway. A study found that black seed oil helped control asthma symptoms and it may be added to the regular asthma therapy in the future. Another study found that taking 500 mg of black seed oil capsules twice a day improved asthma control.
4. May help with losing weight
A research showed that black seed oil may help with decreasing body mass index (BMI) in people with obesity and type 2 diabetes. There are other studies that show black seed oil’s positive effects on lowering blood sugar levels. It has been shown that a dose of 2 grams of crushed black seeds may significantly reduce fasting blood sugar levels and hemoglobin.
Researches also show that black seed oil has anti-inflammatory effects. It targets inflammation and reduces its levels while also having positive effects on joint inflammation for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Taking black seed oil every day may help reduce swelling and stiffness in the joints.
6. May protect brain health
For diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, neuroinflammation which is the inflammation of brain tissue plays a critical role. And since black seed oil has anti-inflammatory effects, it may help with reducing neuroinflammation and protect against brain disorders.
